The results of full-scale fire tests are used to determine optimum distributions of fire sensors for the protection of conveyor belt haulageways in underground mines. Empirical relationships are derived that relate the spacing of fire sensors to the rate of development of the fire hazard.

The goal of the experiments was to understand and quantify the effects of air velocity on the detection of fires in underground conveyor belt haulageways and to determine the rates of generation of toxic gases and smoke as a fire progresses through the stages of smoldering coal, flaming coal, and finally a flaming conveyor belt.

The flaming coal mass subsequently ignited m-wide conveyor belts located approximately m above the coal surface. Gas samples were drawn through an averaging probe located approximately 20 m downstream of the coal for continuous measurement of CO, CO 2, and O 2 as the fire progressed through the stages of smoldering coal, flaming coal, and flaming conveyor by: 9.

There are various options of how to action a fire alarm when detected on a conveyor belt. On longer conveyor belts, the detections systems are zoned to smaller conveyor lengths, for example 20 m or 40 m this makes it easier to get to the fire. Often deluge systems are installed per zone, on detection of a fire, the belt in that specific zone is flooded to extinguish the fire.

each year there many injuries and fatal, that occur around belt Size: KB. In addition to these regulatory changes, recommendations from the recent Technical Advisory Panel on the Use of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining has recommended the widespread use of smoke sensors for early warning fire detection in conveyor belt haulageways.

Lastly, there has been an increase in the use of wider conveyor belts for transport of coal Cited by: 9. The air velocities spanned the range from m/s to m/s. The results of these experiments are compared to previous large-scale results obtained using a smaller fire gallery and much narrower (m) conveyor belts to determine if the fire detection criteria previously developed (1) remained valid for the wider conveyor belts.
